Job Description

About Hiscox UK and Ireland

Hiscox UK & Ireland is a leading brand in the insurance market, recognised as setting the standards others try to emulate. We consistently deliver strong growth and exceptional returns, recruiting only the very best and empowering them to deliver. We are known for insuring the homes of the rich and famous through to the most innovative technology companies. Our customers are diverse and unique and are only united by our ability to provide specialist insurance tailored to their needs.

About the Role

The da Vinci Programme is the largest business and IT transformation programme yet done within Hiscox. It will transform the UK&I retail business, moving from a number of legacy policy administration and claims systems onto a new platform. Along the way it is implementing new insurance products, supporting a new target operating model, delivering new web portals and much else.

The programme has now been running successfully for four years; much has been achieved but much remains to be done. Budget is multiple £10 millions, with a large team centred in London and Colchester, but geographically distributed to other UK and global locations.  It is staffed with business and IT staff from Hiscox, contractor and vendor staff. We are looking for a programme manager to replace the current incumbent, who is moving to a new role within Hiscox.

What you will be doing

Fundamentally, the programme manager will be accountable for all aspects of the programme shaping and delivery across business and IT. This includes:

  • Governance and senior stakeholder management: you will lead on behalf of the programme in Steering Group meetings (chaired by CEO) and other executive forums, and interacting with UK executives on programme direction, delivery and issue management.

  • Leadership to the programme team: you will be the ultimate task manager for all staff on the programme.  You will set priorities, and make sure that clarity and pace are maintained at all times.  You will own programme-wide processes (e.g. risk management, test strategy and others) and programme communications.  You will support the project and work stream managers inside the programme, “looking around the corner” for what might be upcoming.  Most importantly, you will look after the team health within the programme; the da Vinci team is recognised for being high performing and it is critical this is maintained.

  • People management: you will manage the senior business staff in the programme, supporting them in the personal and career development.

  • Vendor management: you will take day-to-day ownership of the key vendor relationships, ensuring they remain healthy for the long term.

  • Budget management: you will be accountable for the overall business and IT programme budget.

You will:

  • Have deep experience in delivering large (multi-year, multi £million) programmes within financial services companies. Experience in leading policy administration system replacement programmes is highly desirable

  • Be recognised as a strong and capable leader, but not a dictator: this is no role for a prima donna

  • Be a strategic thinker but not afraid to get hands dirty on detailed issues

  • Be capable of winning respect and confidence at executive leadership team level

  • Be capable of spanning across a broad range of topics (business, IT, programme & project delivery, people management)

  • Be resilient and balanced, able to keep your head when those around you may be in danger of losing theirs

  • Be comfortable with ambiguity, and understands where ambiguity can be tolerated and where it needs to be eliminated

  • Good “nose” for issues emerging, avoids getting lost in the weeds

  • Able to make the programme fun (as much as possible) for the team, avoid it becoming a death march.
