Department of General Surgery, University Hospital Hairmyres (UHH)

Specialty Doctor in General Surgery

An exciting opportunity for candidates looking to consolidate their experience in General Surgery prior to progressing to specialty training or working towards gaining competencies with a view to applying for CESR.

The department of general surgery at Hairmyres is among the best rated units for general surgical training in the west of Scotland (GMC Survey 2018).

It has excellent education feedback at an undergraduate and postgraduate level. University Hospital Hairmyres has demonstrated success in supporting staff toward application for surgical training programs and relevant postgraduate examinations.

Specialty Doctors will work as part of the senior middle grade team and will provide guidance to our departmental Foundation level and junior middle grade doctors. Specialty doctors are supported in turn by the consultant team. The clinical responsibilities will mirror those of existing senior middle grade doctors which includes our Specialty (ST) Trainees.

Specialty doctors will gain considerable emergency and elective general surgery experience in a very busy department. Successful candidates will participate on a 9 person emergency receiving rota for general surgery. The post is based on 40 hrs / week plus the on call component. This is resident when on-call. You will be accountable to the surgical clinical lead.

The department of general surgery presently has 8 consultants performing a wide range of laparoscopic and open procedures. It performs a large volume of endoscopy including advanced therapeutic procedures and emergency gastroscopy for upper GI bleeds. There are 3 upper GI consultants and 5 colorectal consultants. Vascular surgery cover is provided separately.

Specialty doctors will be supported to participate in audit/research projects and encouraged to deliver teaching to medical undergraduates and appropriate post-graduate groups.

Evidence of experience in delivery of medical education would be beneficial.

Candidates will be expected to be able to demonstrate completion of core surgical training (CREST) competencies and success at the MRCS examination. Relevant clinical experience is essential. Experience of the UK healthcare system would be advantageous.

Possession of FRCS (section 1) would be viewed favourably but is not mandatory. Support will be offered to the successful candidate intending to progress to the FRCS examination.
