Job Description

Applications are invited for the posts of Paediatric Consultant with Neonatology Interest, at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.

The job is a new post, part created by job plan review of existing consultants. The successful applicant would share the delivery of the neonatal weeks on service and general paediatric weeks on service and on call is provided for combined general paediatrics and neonates on a 1 in 12 rota (after this appointment). The successful applicant would be expected to take on the operational and governance lead roles for the neonatal unit in due course.

RCHT has a level 2 Neonatal service (LNU), functioning within the South West Neonatal Operational Delivery Network. We offer full care for infants >27 weeks gestation, short term intensive care for term infants and therapeutic hypothermia (service under review). There has been substantial investment into the service recently with a new (May 2017) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. RCHT also offers comprehensive General Paediatrics, with 14 consultants who treat approximately 1000 elective and 6000 emergency admissions per year and a range of sub-specialist clinics are offered in conjunction with the visiting tertiary specialists from Bristol Children’s Hospital.

The Children’s unit has 29 inpatient beds including 3 HDU beds and an admissions unit plus an 8 bedded surgical daycase unit. There is a well-established adolescent ward. We have relocated our surgical day-case unit into the main Children’s ward area and redesigned and enlarged the admissions unit with short stay observation area.

The department is actively involved in the delivery of the education programme of the University of Exeter Medical School and this post will be part of this provision. Consideration will be given to a suitable applicant being awarded a senior honorary academic title with the UEMS.

Cornwall is a beautiful county which offers an outstanding quality of life and providing many opportunities for outdoor activities, with its sailing waters, surfing beaches and rugged coastal pathways for walking, and cycling. There is a thriving arts and theatre scene as well as an interesting variety of eating places, including celebrity-owned restaurants within Cornwall. The major route both in and out of the county is the A30 which connects with the M5 motorway at Exeter. There is an excellent rail service with daily passenger and sleeper service, and an airport at Newquay with daily connections to many cities throughout the UK and abroad.

Applicants are required to be on the GMC Specialist Register, or within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / EU equivalent certification at the time of interview. Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.
