Common CV mistakes

CV is the first thing employers/recruiters use to know about you. Make sure you prepare carefully to avoid the following common mistakes:


Misspellings and grammatical errors:

Spell check to make sure there are no typos, misspellings or grammatical errors in your CV. It’s always wise to get someone to proofread your resume.


One size fits all:

You can prepare a resume template to start with. But for each job, you need to address the required skills. Employers want to know why and how you will fit the position they are looking for.  


Including too much or too little information

You do not need to include everything you did in the past, limit your resume to the last 10 years. Focus on the jobs and skills that are required. The resume should be about 2 - 3 page length. You can use a format like bullets or numbers to shorten the resume.


Focusing on duties instead of achievements:

You should not just simply list the job duties in your resume. Highlight what you have accomplished in your various positions. Be specific with the achievements.


Making up the skills and knowledge

You should not put the required skills and knowledge that you don’t have. You may go through to the interview stage but interviewers may easily recognise that you just make them up in your resume.


Incorrect contact information:

The last thing that you want to screw up your application is to have incorrect contact information such as email and telephone number. This seems to be trivial but some people still forget to double check the contact information.


Using crazy fonts and colour

Stick to black and white colours. It is best to stick to common fonts such as Arial, Verdana, or Times New Roman.


Including personal information

You do not need to include your personal information such as hobbies, sports or interests. This can be mentioned during the interview.
