The New Product Introduction and Process Technology (NPI-PT) team at GSK’s Barnard Castle site is critical to ensuring the site’s complex manufacturing, device assembly & packaging processes are controlled and robust for all dose forms across a range of different pharmaceutical product streams. The NPI-PT function supports: introduction of exciting new products and technologies; maintenance of existing product production processes; continuous improvement through technical mastery and world class process performance.

Within the NPI-PT team, the Packaging Technology Group is responsible for the provision of a technical packaging service across a number of different production areas, covering a range of medical devices and pack formats produced at the Barnard Castle site. This includes the preparation of technical protocols and reports for validation exercises to support delivery of new product launches, packaging projects and process improvement initiatives.

Due to ongoing requirements for new and novel medical device requirements, along with the continuous improvement culture on site and desire to improve existing ways of working and processes, an opportunity exists for a Device Technologist to join the site packaging team.

Your role will span technical support for new product introductions interacting with numerous on site departments & functions as well as component and equipment suppliers. The role will also require support for design and packaging projects such as device and pack design modifications, equipment installation / validation, Etc. As well as process improvement initiatives and optimisation projects to improve line performance, improve quality, customer service, reduce costs and complexity.

You’ll also be involved in day to day trouble shooting and provide reactive support through continuous improvement tools & techniques (i.e. problem solving, RCA, Etc.). This is applicable to all medical devices produced on site across a range of production areas, as well as a thorough understanding of secondary (cartons, leaflets, labels, Etc) through to tertiary (i.e. cases, trays, Etc.) packaging. The role will also incorporate assessment of new medical device components, line trials, equipment validation, creating and updating technical specifications and drawings.

GSK Barnard Castle is one of the most complex sites globally in the GSK network with regards to pack format complexity. This is a great opportunity for an enthusiastic, driven, hard working, team player to join an established packaging technology team as a device technologist. Not only to drive through new device technologies associated with new product introduction projects, but also to assess and improve existing devices and associated processes.

Ideally you’ll have a good knowledge of, device components, assembly processes, specifications, packaging equipment and plant covering devices, secondary & tertiary packaging – preferably with direct experience in the pharmaceutical, or a highly regulated industry.

Key responsibilities will include:
- Management of device project activities
- Preparing protocols, rationales and reports for development and validation studies
- Liaison with technical contacts on site
- Troubleshooting established and new device & packaging processes
- Co-ordination of production trials
- Progression of device & pack changes via MERPS and Agile systems
- Updating of technical specifications and drawings for device & packaging components
- Provide day to day reactive device technologist support to the site
- Progression of vendor complaints for device / component / packaging issues
- Build and maintain links with internal key people/groups including, Production, Operational Quality, Supplier Quality, Launch and Change Organisation, Project Engineering, Validation and Operational Excellence.
- Liaison with external key device / packaging component suppliers and equipment suppliers to drive improvements on material and machine interactions. Devise and implement solutions for simple and complex problems
- Provide technical support to on-going and new device and packaging projects at site
